Every three years, Milken Scholar Alumni are invited to reconvene for a weekend of sessions and workshops that are tailored to their professional development, personal growth and well-being.  The Milken Scholars Program founded in 1989 by Mike and Lori Milken, now has over 400 Alumni spanning from the Class of 1989 to 2016, years in which Scholars were selected as seniors in high school to join the Program.  Upon graduating from their respective universities our Scholars are inducted as Alumni of the Milken Scholars Program.

From February 28 to March 1, 91 Scholars and 9 family members came together in Santa Monica, CA to build and strengthen relationships as they found new ways of working together while reliving and creating fond memories.  This space was shared with professional guests and speakers for Alumni Scholars to explore different pathways to leadership while balancing their professional aspirations with their personal health and well-being.  The different sessions allowed Scholars to consider a holistic approach towards continued success as top performers in their fields.  Selected as “Lifelong Leaders for a Better World” for encompassing the pillars of scholarship, leadership, community service and character, throughout the weekend Alumni Scholars were able to recall where they were then, reflect on where they are now and to envision where they see themselves tomorrow as they continue to embody the Program’s motto.  A few of the sessions for the event included:

  • Finding Balance in Life on a Path to Leadership
An interview of Jay Shetty, Award-winning digital strategist & Author, Think Like a Monk
  • Health and Wellness through a Balanced Lifestyle
Dr. Dean Ornish, Founder and President of Preventive Medicine Research Institute/Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco

  • Defining the event strands: Sharing your perspective and professional expertise
    1. George Mumford, Mindfulness and Performance Expert
    2. Dr. Michael J. Breus, Clinical Psychologist and Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine
    3. Nuria Santamaria, CMO and Co-founder, Encantos Brands
    4. Lorraine Spurge, CEO, Maplestone Capital Advisors
    5. Patrick Mitchell, Senior Advisor to the CIO at Guggenheim Partners

The event concluded with a celebration of the 30-year anniversary of the Milken Scholars Program where co-founders Mike and Lori Milken toasted with our attendees wishing our Alumni Scholars continued health, joy and success as Lifelong Leaders for a Better World.
