David earned his bachelor's degree in history from Yale University. While in college, he volunteered to teach English in China and Korea, specifically Sichuan province and Choong chun nam book respectively. He also served as the activities coordinator for YKAMP (Yale Korean American Mentoring Program), which endeavors to introduce the Korean culture and language, as well as to provide a Korean-American friend, to adopted Koreans in Connecticut. He also participated in a few other organizations, including Korean-American Students at Yale, the Yale Globalist, the kendo club and the Urban Improvement Corps.
