Meet Morris Vanegas, MS '08
2008 Milken Scholar, Morris Vanegas, is a true Renaissance Man. He graduated from the California Academy of Mathematics and Science in Carson having compiled laurels in math, science, and history, as well as earning recognition as a National Hispanic Scholar and National Honor Society Member. After entering the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall of 2008 to study astronautical engineering, Morris continues to further broaden his horizon.

Fall Visits Combine Campus Tours, Community Service, and Scholars Camaraderie
This fall, the Milken Scholars Program traveled across the country for campus tours, group dinners and community service. These visits are a chance for program directors and staff to meet with Scholars in groups and individually to offer support, advice or an empathetic ear.
They also provide Scholars an opportunity to maintain contact and support each other throughout the year. In addition, Scholars came together in both New York and Berkeley to spend the afternoon helping others, and this December, we are joining Project Angel Food at their Hollywood kitchen in conjunction with the Los Angeles annual Holiday Dinner, a special evening where Scholars home can gather, reconnect, and discuss the year ahead.

High School Standouts Named 2008 Milken Scholars
A number of outstanding high school seniors have been named 2008 Milken Scholars by the Milken Family Foundation, including three valedictorians. Many are the first in their families to go to college. A majority of the new Scholars are children of immigrants, three of whom were born outside of the United States themselves. Each recipient has a record of excellence in academics, leadership and service, and has triumphed over obstacles. Their myriad accomplishments range from creating an organization to combat genocide in Darfur to conducting an intensive multi-year molecular biology study on breast cancer.

This spring we will be dining in Manhattan, Washington, D.C. and Boston, and taking Scholar-guided tours of schools such as Harvard, Princeton and Yale. We will step out to Berkeley and Stanford and check in with Scholars attending schools throughout Southern California.

The Milken Scholars Program Begins its Twentieth Year
In 1989, 16 students from A. Philip Randolph High School in Harlem, New York were recognized and rewarded with a scholarship that was hardly typical. Mike and Lori Milken decided that a scholarship program should do more than disburse funds. It should bring together students who have managed to perform at an academically high level despite being faced with substantial obstacles, and provide them with resources for success—both tangible and intangible—that would otherwise be out of their reach. They founded the Milken Scholars Program, an initiative of the Milken Family Foundation, to do just that.

Meet Bonny Taing, MS '04
When she isn't attending classes at Loyola Marymount University, Woodrow Wilson High School alum and 2004 Milken Scholar Bonny Taing doesn't like to sit around.
In addition to graduating this summer with a double major in business administration and political science, she has amassed an impressive record of community service, world travel and campus involvement, and no one expects her to slow down any time soon.
